Division and brigade commanders with their entire staff will stand on the banks of the river and not permit a man to attempt to cross until they are satisfied that his cartridge and can boxes and ammunition are so arranged as not to get wet in crossing the river.

General Ferguson reports line of skirmishers advancing against him and Strahl; thought to be a heavy line of battle supporting. Am sending one brigade to Jonesborough; have sent Ferguson also. Don's think it safe to send you more troops, except in case of necessity. Call upon General Lee for all of his reserves if necessary. General Walthall has two brigades in reserve.
