LIEUTENANT: In reference to the operations of that portion of above regiment under my immediate command on the 1st instant, I have the honor to make the following report:

At 7. 45 on the morning of that day I received from Colonel P. J. Claassen the following order:

Colonel SAVAGE:

We are pretty attacked on the Neuse bridge. Get your command all ready. Let me have, as soon as possible, a troops (full) with one of your howitzers. Occupy the road toward the Gully. As soon as you can signal or telegraph open communication with me.
