XXXVI. Paragraph XXVII, Special Orders, Numbers 16, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, current series, is hereby revoked, and Brigadier General W. T. Wofford, Provisional Army, C. S., will proceed to Northern Georgia, with full power to collect such stragglers and deserters and to dissolve such illegal organizations as may be found in that section. He will place them in temporary organizations for immediate duty until they can be sent to their proper commands. He will also enroll all men liable to conscription who have thus far evaded the service. To accomplish these ends and to disperse such bands of deserters as may infest the country, he is authorized to obtain from Major General Howell Cobb, commanding, &c., such force as may be necessary.

I. General J. B. Hood is relieved, at his own request, by the War Department from the command of the Army of Tennessee. He will report for orders to the War Department, at Richmond, Va.

II. Lieutenant General R. Taylor, commanding Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, will assume command of the Army of Tennessee until further orders.

SOLDIERS: At my request I have this day been relieved from the command of this army. In taking leave of you accept my thanks for the patience with which you have endured your many hardships during the recent campaign. I am alone responsible for its conception, and strived hard to do my duty in its execution. I urge upon you the importance of giving your entire support to the distinguished soldier who now assumes command, and I shall look with deep interest upon all your future operations and rejoice at your successes.
