HEADQUARTERS, Moccasin Creek, March 24, 18656.15 p. m. GENERAL: I struck a portion of the Twenty-fifth (colored) Corps this morning south of the creek. They attacked me, but we repulsed them and then droVe them two miles to their works, close to Coxs Bridge. They appear to be guarding their pontoons. Prisoners say that the Fourteenth and Seventeenth Corps are in Goldsborongh, the Twentieth entering to-day, and the Fifteenth iu rear. I suppose this latter weiit down on the other side of the river. They expect to recruit here for two weeks. If the troops at Coxs Bridge remain there to-morrow you could strike them to great advantage, and could par- tially destroy their pontoons. There is no late news from Wheeler. I am, very respectfully, yours, WADE HAMPTON, Lieutenant- General. General J. E. JOHNSTON, Commanding. ATKINSONS HousE, March 25, 186510.15 a. m. GENERAL: General Wheeler reports that a force of the enemy yes- terday crossed the Little River at Kennedys Bridge. I have directed General Wheeler to send a part of his force on the other side of Little River and watch any movements of the enemy there. As soon as I am satisfied that the enemy have retired on this road I will leave a picket on it and move the rest of my force over to the other road. I am now holding Moccasiu Creek. Very respectfully, your obedient servant, WADE HAMPTON, Lieutenant- General. General J. E. JOHNSTON, Commanding. ADDENDA. Return of casualties iu the cavalry, March 1821, 1865. Killed. Wounded.
