I am pretty new to studying the Civil War and would like to expand my knowledge of it. Thanks for any help... DocDavies

My favorite author is none other than James McPherson. His Pulitzer Prize winning book Battle Cry of Freedom is a must read for anyone interested in The Civil War.

This guy makes me want to hang myself. I dont know where to begin...im at a loss for words. If your going to be on a CIVIL war forum, please learn to spell CIVIL right. You had it right at the bottom, till you got to "The Cival War." I pray that you get this right or Im gonna freak. And yes, people like me will do this because we care enough that you atleast spell it right.

I really like James M. McPherson, but if I were to recommend a single book, it would definitely be "The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study In Command", by Edwin B. Coddington. This guy really makes the entire campaign really easy to understand. He contends that Gettysburg was a crucial Union victory, primarily because of the effective leadership of Union forces, not only because Meade was the beneficiary of Lee's mistakes. I am reading it for the fifth time, and have found it to be an invaluable resource on the battle.

Pick a battle that means something to you personally, like one that a relative fought in or one that was fought near you and start there. To me it has brought more interest in the Civil War than just picking a good book. Also make sure you study the armies involved.

I recommend These Honored Dead: The History of the Civil War. It can be ordered off of amazon.com. This book is short, but very informative and an all around good read.
McPherson's 'Battle Cry of Freedom' is a great book. Memoirs are a good way of understanding the lives of soldiers and generals. I would recommend Sam R Watkins' 'Co. Aytch' and U.S Grant's 'Memoirs'.

New to this site also. I just finished ready In Lincoln Navy. Very good book if you are into how the sailor was during the Civil War. Looking for another book about services in the Army but can not remember the name of the book. If anyone knows what book I am talking about let me know.

I just finished the National Geographic book "Eyewitness to the Civil War" and I most say I loved every page of it. I took me awhile to get through it but now I feel sad it's over. The pictures and info was great and exicitng. Does anyone know of other books that are equal to the quality of this on?

I have a couple of suggestions;
_From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America_ by General James Longstreet.
Of course, Shelby Foote can't be beat. The man is a wealth of information.
For Civil War novels, I would recommend Michael Shaara's _The Killer Angels_, the book on which the movie "Gettysburg" was based.
Just my opinion.

I am reading the Killer Angels right now, I found it on the clearance rack at my local Borders bookstore, along with: Civil War A Complete Photographic History. I think I paid $8 for The Killer Angels, and $20 for the one with 4000 photos. If anyone has a Borders Bookstore close by you might want to check for both of those books.

A really good Civil War book is The Killer Angels, By Michael Sharra. It tells alot about gettysburg and is a great read. It shows the different opinions of the generals on the southern side during the battle.

I found that besides Foote and Cattons books, the companion books to Burn's The Civil War and the God's and Generals Movie were very good, as well as Nevin's series of books on the social and political aspect of the time.

You've already read some pretty good books. My favorite authors are Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote, William C. Davis, James McPherson and David Herbert Donald. You would find almost anything written by those authors very interesting and informative.
One book I thoroughly enjoyed is "With My Face to the Enemy: Perspectives on the Civil War." It contains essays on various parts of the war, written by well known and respected authors.
If you're interested in U.S. Grant, the biography Jean Edward Smith, simply titled "Grant" is one of the best I've read.
Recently my son sent me "House of Abraham," by Stephen Berry. It's more about the Todd's than about Lincoln, but quite interesting and very well written.
"Team of Rivals," is very popular right now. I've had it on my shelves for two years, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet...I'm way behind on my reading.
"Lee's Cavalrymen," is another good book. The author is Edward Longacre.
If you can stand to sit and read from your computer screen, try the Gutenberg web site. They have quite a few C.W. books for download, mostly written by people who were there.

Hi there!
I am new to the forum, and looking forward to some rewarding discussions, and a great learning experience. Books are a good place to start.
I have read quite a few books about the Civil War. I have categorized my favorites, but I list them in no particular order. I also have many more in my own library, but these come to the for front of my mind.
Non-Fiction:
Diary of a Confederate Soldier and Orphan Brigade by William Davis; Bloody Roads South by Noah Trudeau; Landscape Turned Red by Stephen Sears; Iron Brigade by Alan Nolan; and who can forget Co. Aitch by Sam Watkins?
Fiction
Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come by John Fox Jr. (Note: You must appreciate the writing styles of 19th and early 20th century authors to appreciate this little gem); Look Away and Until the End by Harold Coyle
Other
I listed other as a seperate category because I am never sure exactly sure what category Killer Angels by Mike Shaara should fall into. To write in this style, and the way he brought Gettysburg to life, I rather expect that one would have to take some literary license, so it cannot be considered as strictly non-fiction, and yet, this book is so accurate in its creation that I cannot exactly call it fiction, either.
Well, for what it is worth, thats my favorites.

I think "The Killer Angeles BY Micheal Sharra" is the best choice for the civil war book. Its describes briefly on the civil war. Its my really favourite book on civil war. It also tells the much experienced on war.

An excellent book detailing everything leading up to the Civil war then phasing into the battles and the economic influences the war created. I currently have the book on ebay at an excellent price. Research the book and if anyone wants to purchase my copy, please visit
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170739706378&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123 and purchase the book. I have it set at what I believe is a reasonable price and it's certainly something every histostorical and civil war buff should have. Thanks.
