FORT DONELSON, May 23, 1863.

SIR: Have just returned. Yesterday some of my cavalry, under Major Baird, had a skirmish with the rebels. Some of Cox's command, on Yellow Creek, about 4 miles from our camp, routed and chased them for 12 miles, capturing 7 prisoners. Loss not known. On our side Captain Paul, Fifth Iowa Cavalry, slightly [wounded]. To-day we were fired upon, wounding Lieutenant Beatty, Fifth Iowa Cavalry, and 1 man severely.
