Commanding Seventh Ohio Cavalry:

COLONEL: The commanding general directs that you relieve the pickets of General Palmer's escort now on the road that General Johnson moved out on, and picket that road, as well as the road to the right. Please relieve the pickets of General Palmer's escort as soon as possible to-night.

GENERAL: I find the line occupied by your brigade much more extended than I thought yesterday evening. It will take nearly, if not quite, all of my reserve to fill it. Please not remove the brigade until you absolutely need it. When you do so need it I will take care of myself.
