Washington City, D. C., June 20, 1862.

Colonel ALFRED W. ELLET,

Commanding Ram Fleet, opposite Memphis:

I rwegret that your brothe's illness deprives the Government of his skillful and gallant services, but have confidnece that you will supply his place better than anyone else. You will observe that by his instructions the Ram Fleet was placed under the geenral command of the commander of the gu- boat squadron. The President deisire you to consider yourslf in the same positin, believing that co- operative action will be more likely to produce good results than indeparndent action, and that the commander of the gun- boats should have chief command. I shall be glad to have full and frequent reports from yuou.
