HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE SOUTH,
Hilton Head, S. C., October --, 1862.

MAJOR: I have the honor to report that on the 18th instant I was informed by Major-General Mitchel, commanding Department of the South, that an expedition was being prepared to undertake offensive operations upon the main-land of South Carolina, and was directed to have a sufficient number of signal officers prepared to accompany it.

On the 20th instant, after another consultation with General Mitchel, I made the following assignments of signal officers and directed them to report accordingly:

First Lieutenant G. H. Hill to report on board steamer Ben De Ford to General Brannan.

First Lieutenant J. F. Findley to report on board gunboat Water Witch.

Second Lieutenant F. E. Town to report on board gunboat Paul Jones.

Second Lieutenant T. L. Hatfield to report on board gunboat Marblehead.

Second Lieutenant W. H. Hamner to report on board gunboat Conemaugh.

Second Lieutenant T. C. Vidal to report on board steamer Planter.

Second Lieutenant C. F. Cross to report on board steamer Boston.
