Commanding Seventeenth Army Corps:

In sending you inclosed order (Numbers 194)* the major-General commanding desires me to say that he wishes the brigade on the canal to be retained there for the present; this, leaving General Leggett's division in present position, will give you four brigades to move by transports to the right. General Osterhaus will have General Smith's and (with the exception of four brigades left to hold Fort McAllister and King's Bridge) General Hazen's divisions. The general also desires me to say that he consider sit of the utmost importance to have the road to King's Bridge placed as soon as possible and kept in good hauling order. To this end he suggests that each section of it be placed in charge of a good, competent officer, who will see that the work required is done with as little delay as possible.

Seventeenth Army Corps, will, in accordance with Special Orders, Numbers 306, army corps headquarters. detail from his command three companies of infantry, properly officered, for guard at King's Bridge. They will proceed to that place forthwith, and will protect the bridge until relieved.
