HEADQUARTERS FIRST DIVISION, DETACHMENT ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE,
Eastport, Miss., January 17, 1865.

The instructions for passing pickets, when the First Division came to Eastport, was that the approval of brigade commanders was suffi- cient, and such has been the rule until the 16th instant, when the instructions were changed.

Division and brigade commanders will send to these headquarters without delay the trophies and reports called for in the official copy of circular from General Thomas' headquarters, and dated Pulaski, Tenn., December 27.

Commanding Brigade:

GENERAL: Immediately on the receipt of this, you will take the effective men of your command and cross the river at the Eastport ferry. After selecting a camp for your brigade, you will report for orders to Major-General Thomas. There is a probability that you may be ordered to remain on the south bank of the river. Commence crossing early to-morrow morning, and be prepared for a reconnaissance toward Corinth.
