Report that Ferguson with 4,000 men and eight pieces of artillery is moving toward the road. Keep the country south of you will scouted.

Have every part of your command on the alert and send (if you have them) cavalry or mounted infantry some distance south as a feeler.

In accordance with Special Orders, Numbers 222, headquarters Sixteenth Army Corps, the Fourth Illinois Cavalry, Eleventh Illinois Calvary, and Tenth Missouri Cavalry, under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Wallace, Fourth Illinois Cavalry, will be immediately transferred to Vicksburg, Miss., to report to department headquarters for duty. The quartermaster's department will furnish necessary transportation.
