HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE POTOMAC,
November 23, 1863.

Major-General FRENCH,

Commanding Third Corps:

The brigade near Culpeper may be withdrawn at once. General Warren refers to the condition of the roads from Brandy Station to the crossing of Mountain run as the one requiring heavy working parties.

A. A. HUMPHREYS,

Major-General, and Chief of Staff.

HEADQUARTERS SECOND CORPS,
November 23, 1863.

Major-General HUMPHREYS, Chief of Staff:

I have been busy all day directing and examining, and the meeting escaped my memory. My non-attendance was known to you. I cannot think I could be supposed to have received any instructions in regard to the movement to-morrow.

G. K. WARREN,

Major-General.

[Indorsement.]

DEAR WILLIAMS: What is this in reply to?

A. A. H. [HUMPHREYS.]

HEADQUARTERS SECOND CAVALRY DIVISION,
November 23, [1863]-12. 50 p. m.

Colonel C. ROSS SMITH,

Chief of Staff, Cavalry Corps:

COLONEL: The advance of my division had crossed the Rapidan at Ely's Ford before I received the order countermanding a movement for to-day. There were 7 cavalrymen on picket on the other side. Only one regiment of mine was seen by the enemy. I now have one brigade at Richardsville and one near Ellis' Ford. I have sent my wagon train to Brandy Station to load with forage. A party of 30 rebel cavalry was at Richardsville this morning. My headquarters near Ellis' Ford.

Yours, &c.,

D. MCM. GREGG,

Brigadier-General of Volunteers.

HEADQUARTERS SECOND CAVALRY DIVISION,
November 23, 1863.

Colonel P. HUEY, Commanding Second Brigade:

COLONEL: The command will not cross at United States Ford, as before directed, but will cross the Rappahannock at Ellis' Ford, and the Rapidan at Ely's Ford. Your brigade will move in advance, and at the hour specified in your former instructions.

By command of Brigadier-General Gregg:

H. C. WEIR,

Assistant Adjutant-General.
