Raleigh:

After a furious bombardment from the fleet all day the enemy's infantry assaulted Fort Fisher at 4 p. m. General Whiting reports at 6.30 p. m. that the attack was repulsed. We are re-enforcing the fort.

It is believed by the commander of your troops that the effort will fail if made, and at a heavy sacrifice. The enemy's force is represented and believed to be 12,00. If defended, as I believe it will be, by your veterans and the former garrison it cannot be taken. It is not invested and cannot be unless the fleet passes.
