VIII. Major General, G. W. Morell is assigned, until further orders, to the command of the troops on the Potomac, from the mouth of the Opequon Creek to Cumberland, including the commands of Brigadier Gens. Kelley and Kenly.

IX. Brigadier General D. Butterfield is assigned to the command of the First Division (Morell's), Porter's corps.

Major- Generals BANKS and HEINTZELMAN:

My corps of observation just returned from Bull Run Mountain, and report the enemy still encamped 6 miles from Middleburg, on the Winchester pike. General Bayard's cavalry force is encamped to-night 2 miles least of Aldie. The force reported to you some time ago by me at Purcellville, under General Munford, about 1,500 cavalry and two pieces of artillery, passed through Middleburg toward Upperville day before yesterday, in the evening.
