Harpers Ferry and the spark that ignited the Civil War
West Virginia’s unique place in Civil War history was sealed by its birth. Admitted to the Union in 1863 by presidential proclamation, the Mountain State was the only state created by seceding from a Confederate state.
Today visitors can explore Civil War history in the very place where it all began. The first federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry was the site of abolitionist John Brown’s 1859 raid. The turmoil caused by this attack sent ripples throughout the nation; many historians say this was the spark that ignited the Civil War.
Located at the confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers, Harpers Ferry’s strategic position along the West Virginia-Virginia-Maryland borders was a much sought-after holding of both Union and Confederate troops because of its value as a manufacturing base.
The town exchanged hands eight times throughout the war. Stonewall Jackson achieved his most brilliant victory here in September of 1862, when he captured 12,500 Union soldiers—the largest surrender of American troops until WWII. Ultimately, it became the base of operations for Union General Philip Sheridan’s invasions into the Shenandoah Valley in 1864.
Harpers Ferry and the surrounding Harpers Ferry National Historical Park have been restored to their 19th century appearance. Brick sidewalks lead to quaint shops and restaurants interspersed with museums and exhibits that tell the stories of days gone by. The park also hosts a variety of events with living history walks, tours, and displays.
One of the few towns located along the Appalachian Trail, the park offers an
abundance of outdoor recreation for all ages. Enjoy a day of biking, fishing, boating or whitewater rafting. Hike sections of the Appalachian Trail or C & O Canal and experience the breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness.
Perhaps Thomas Jefferson said it best after his 1783 visit to Harpers Ferry: “The passage of the Potomac through the Blue Ridge is perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.”
