The enemy made two assault to-day on Finley's and Lewis's brigades, of Bate's division, in Lee's corps, both of which were handsomely repulsed, with loss to them.

General Cleburn is moving to your assistance with two brigades. Please hold them to support any part of your line that may be in most danger.

If you find Bate too much exposed to a flank attack to-night the general thinks you had [better] fall back into the line at Baugh's. You must judge of the necessity, getting all the information you can from Jackson. Should you fall back, try to carry off whatever arms, &c., there may be in your front.
