GENERAL: Your letter of July 11 has been received. I do not desire the local troops to be turned out without further developments of the enemy on the north side of the James. I only wish you to make preparations to hold the defenses near Chaffin's Bluff with other forces now under your command, so that the two brigades of Wilcox's division may be in reserve and ready to move to any point of our lines where they may be needed. I hope this can be done without calling out the locals, and that it will be done as soon as practicable.

LIEUTENANT: I respectfully make the following report of mining operations: Shaft No. 1, at Pegram's salient, is completed, and the principal gallery completed so as to receive the frames a distance of 7 1/2 feet, 6 feet high by 3 feet inches wide. The shaft, No. 2, at Pegram's salient, is completed, and the principal gallery completed, and the frames and sheeting placed for a distance of 7 1/2 feet, and 5 feet completed so as to receive the frames. The shaft at Colquitt's salient has been commenced and excavated to a depth of 5 feet. Its present location renders it safe to the workmen. Have constructed a frame and windlass for one shaft, repaired tools for the use of the miners, &c.
