He must report fully as to the estimated numbers, present position, amount of artillery, &c., that the enemy have. Keep the Chesterfield in the Wappoo Cut out of sight of the enemy.

Have the Fifth, Forty-seventh, and Thirty-seventh Georgia Regiments, and Bonaud's battalion, ready to move to the support of Major Jenkins on John's Island at a moment's notice. A boat will be sent through Wappoo Cut to Fort Pemberton as soon as possible. It will be there about 10 o'clock to-night. Instructions have been given for the officer in charge to report his arrival to you at once. Do not disturb the men unnecessarily in getting them prepared to move.

I have no very definite information form Robertson or Major Jenkins of position of enemy on John's Island. Operator at Pemberton reports them at P. Gervais', on the river road, from which they can enfilade our works on James Island. I am expecting more accurate information.

Send an intelligent and bold scouting party, only 3 or 4 men, directly across the river near Batteries Pringle or Tynes, out of view from enemy's ships, to ascertain if enemy has position on John's Island in rear of or enfilading works on James Island; party should endeavor to penetrate to the river road and communicate with Major Jenkins' command. Lose no time in this.
