Aggregate present for duty at Grenada, 15,000 effective; at Vicksburg, 18,000; at Port Hudson, La., 10,000 at Jackson, 1,800; at Columbus, 1,800, including those on line of Mobile and Ohio Railroad. General Pemberton absent.

Has the cavalry regiment at Montgomery no arms? I can furnish about 500 muskets. When ordered, they should go to Columbus.

Colonel Roddey is ordered to report to you; also the regiment at Montgomery, which has no arms; it goes to Columbus. Muskets and about 300 sabers can be furnished. Will you have the latter?

You are assistant to command of all the cavalry in this department except that in the Second Military District. You will report to General Johnston for operation in connection with Bragg;s cavalry.

Lieutenant-General PEMBERTON:

You place me in command of all the cavalry in your department except in District Numbers 2. Please inform me as to your wishes in regard to force to be left as cavalry pickets. I desire to put a cavalry force command in the field for active operations. Adams, for instance, is on the river. Do you need him there?
