Come Visit Virginia's Heartland

The Tranquil Heartland of Virginia

A half hour drive southwest from Richmond, Virginia, one enters the tranquil but history packed region of Virginia’s Heartland, comprised of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, and Prince Edward counties. The Heartland region has gorgeous countryside, seven state parks and four wildlife management areas offering lots of outdoor recreational opportunities, many historic sites, and unique shopping opportunities.

The Town of Farmville is the retail and service hub of Virginia’s Heartland, with many shops and stores, including Green Front Furniture, offering over 700,000 square feet of furniture, carpet, and accessories, imported from all over and displayed in renovated tobacco warehouses and in several stores along Farmville’s Main Street, in the historic district of the historic town. Farmville is just a few miles southwest from Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and is the town in which General Ulysses S. Grant wrote the first letter to General Robert E. Lee, suggesting surrender on April 7, 1865.

Farmville is also a college town, with Longwood University at its center and Hampden-Sydney College just south of town. Both institutions of higher education are steeped in history, yet Farmville has a youthful spirit, with cafés and coffee shops lining Main Street and the back streets of the historic district.
