ATLANTA, August 21, 1864- 7.30 p. m.

Major gen. D. H. MAURY,

Ferguson on raid. Don's know when he will return. I had no intimation that the exchange of Pillow for Ferguson was contemplated until receipt of your former dispatch consenting thereto. What news from Mobile? Have you enough troops to hold it?

HEADQUARTERS LEE'S CORPS,

TO DIVISION COMMANDERS:

Sunday night is a favorite time with the enemy to make changes on his line. The lieutenant-general commanding directs that you keep your scouts up to his line to-night, and impress upon your officers the importance of working every day.

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

J. W. RATCHFORD,

Assistant Adjutant-General.

AUGUST 22, 1864.

Honorable JAMES A. SEDDON,

AUGUST 22, 1864.

General BRAXTON BRAGG,

Richmond, Va.:

Major General Edward Johnson reported for duty here to-day. I am daily expecting Major-General Loring to return, and would, therefore, respectfully suggest that as Major-General French has applied to be relieved from duty with this army, his wishes be complied with, and Major-General Johnson assigned to his division. The application of Major-General French was forwarded august 11, by mail.

J. B. HOOD,

General.
