GENERAL: The general commanding requests me to say that you know the position of General French, and can send to him for a brigade if you should need it. He desires you to send orders to General French to open his artillery on them; you can judge whether such will assist you any or not.

Respectfully referred to Major-General French, who will send a brigade at once to the Lick Skillet road. The courier will conduct you. You will please open fire, if in your judgment it is advisable.

The general directs that you call upon Generals Bate and French to support, if you require it. The object is to hold the enemy in check. The general desires not to lose Bate's position, however.
