GENERAL: Lieutenant-General Hardee directs me to say he has left a brigade on the left of our line, from which he has directed that skirmishers shall be thrown out to cover the front to the angle of the line. He would like to have this skirmish line relieved as soon as you have men sufficient.

GENERAL: The enemy recrossed the river at Howell's Ferry. No report from Colonel Ross of the force that came to this side. It was doubtless and attempt to capture my pickets watching that point. No advance of the force from the church.
