NEAR ATLANTA, July 21, 1864.

Honorable J. A. SEDDON, Richmond, Va.:

This morning the enemy attacked Cleburne's division, of Hardee's corps, and a portion of General Wheeler's cavalry, upon our extreme right, but were handsomely repulsed. Colonel Adams, Thirty-third Alabama, was killed.

Bragg heard from; said to be 4,000 on new raid; be as active as heretofore to destroy it. Armstrong is in your vicinity; correspond with him. Boats on the river should be destroyed.

A battery of artillery from Colonel Hallonquist's reserves has just come up, and is being placed in position. Immediately on receipt of your request for re-enforcements I sent a staff officer to you with request that you would send one of your staff to conduct them. The troops are ready and waiting; say 300 men.
