By Generals Hood and Maury's orders I assumed command of both portions of North Alabama on the 15th ultimo, and moved to Talladega to meet expected raid, carrying Pillow's brigade with me. Reported to you by telegraph and letters. Now have Pillow's brigade at Opelika, Ala., Clanton's at Blue Mountain. I am here temporarily by General Maury's request.
