GENERAL: I have intended at the first opportunity to express my gratitude to yourself, Colonel Este, and the officers and men of his brigade for their gallant conduct in the battle of Jonesborough of September 1, 1864. I have endeavored to do full justice to them in my official report.+ Colonel Este arrived at a most important and critical moment, his brigade well formed. The Second Brigade of my division, after a most gallant struggle, had failed to drive the enemy from his works, had been forced to retire under shelter of the ground
