The enemy fortifying southern bank of the Rappahannock. His force estimated from 5,000 to 7,000. General Smith in command. Reconnoitering parties fired into yesterday and to-day. A sergeant of the Rhode Island cavalry shot in the arm. Several horses wounded.

Had some sharp work yesterday and silenced several of the rebel batteries and drove them to the words. The great difficulty is that the river is generally impassable. Weather excellent. We are rapidly completing our preparations for the attack. Enemy seem to be in full force and don't like shells.
