FORT MONROE, VA., May 4, 1863.

Major-General PECK, Commanding, Suffolk:

It is not best to interrupt the pursuit of the enemy; but our troops should be recalled the moment the enemy crosses the Blackwater. I would rather have Gordon or Getty. The movement to be made is an important one and needs experience in command. But your safety must be consulted.

The enemy will not be likely to return unless Hooker fails.

JOHN A. DIX,

Major-General.

FORT MONROE, May 4, 1863.

Major-General PECK, Commanding, Suffolk:

Do you mean to say that all the forces before Suffolk have moved for the Blackwater, including Pickett's division? Advise me as soon as possible. I do not quite understand your dispatch.

JOHN A. DIX,

Major-General.

FORT MONROE, May 4, 1863.

Major-General PECK:

Defer till to-morrow.

JOHN A. DIX,

Major-General.

Conversing with the troops he asked whose they were. They said they were Hood's division. They are being re-enforced in some measure from below-whether from your
