Please keep me informed of the progress of the troops of your division toward this place. The hour every train starts from Front Royal should be communicated.

MANASSAS, June 20, 1862-12.30 p. m.

Major-General SHIELDS, Front Royal:

There are reports of re-enforcements having reached the rebel army in the valley. Therefore the general, not regarding your position a safe one, wishes you to make your way with your division to this place as fast as is compatible with the safety of those you leave behind to bring up the rear. See well that right flank is not molested.
