Commanding Second Division:

GENERAL: You will cause your strongest brigade to report at these headquarters to-morrow night (the 21st) to assist in the contemplated assault on the rebel lines. The men will be provided with three days' rations in haversacks and eighty rounds of ammunition.

SPECIAL ORDERS, HDQRS. SEVENTEENTH ARMY CORPS, NO. 312.

Near Savannah, GA., December 20, 1864.

I. Brigadier General G. A. Smith, commanding Fourth Division, will detail from the First Minnesota Battery one gunner and three men to report to Major General A. C. Waterhouse, chief of artillery, at the battery on the causeway immediately.

II. Brigadier General M. D. Leggett, commanding Third Division, will detail from the Fifteenth Ohio Battery one sergeant and three men to report to Major A. C. Waterhouse, chief of artillery, at the battery on the causeway immediately.

IV. As soon as a regiment from each corps in the Army of Georgia has reported, in accordance with orders from Major-General Sherman, to Colonel Beckwith, acting chief quartermaster, Military Division of the Mississippi, at King's Bridge, Colonel B. F. Potts, commanding First Brigade, Fourth Division, Seventeenth Army Corps, will proceed to the front with his command and report to his division commander.

GENERAL: I am directed by the major-General commanding to say to you that the order sent herewith* is to be considered imperative and to be obeyed by Colonel Potts without regard to any orders he may receive from Colonel Beckwith to the contrary. He wish you to have your regiment (350 strong) and fifty report to Colonel Beckwith, in accordance with Special Orders, No. 311, extract IV, from these headquarters, of yesterday's date, before the brigade is relieved.
