GENERAL: The enemy evacuated his position opposite me this morning, probably impelled by some movement on his flank. I have put one brigade of Second Division across, and am making preparations to cross the entire Second Division, when I will push toward King's Bridge and to the nearest point on the railroad. There is a great deal of traffic over the Gulf road, trains passing almost continually. I will report again as soon as I have anything new to report.

CAPTAIN: In accordance with orders from General Howard, I ordered General Sprague to proceed to King's Bridge (leaving two regiments in his present position) and relieve Colonel Pott's brigade, of the Fourth Division, which I ordered to the front. General Sherman has ordered General Sprague and his command back to its original position, and now there are no troops at the bridge to unload supplies.

II. Brigadier General J. W. Sprague, commanding Second Brigade, First Division, will forthwith send two regiments of his command to King's Bridge for the purpose of unloading vessels. The senior officer will report to the officer in charge of the unloading of subsistentence stores.

III. Special Orders, No. 311, extract II, from these headquarters, of this date, directing General Sprague to send two regiments from his command to King's Bridge, is hereby revoked.

IV. Brigadier General G. A. Smith, commanding Fourth Division, will direct Colonel Pott's bridge to remain at King's Bridge until relieved by a regiment from each corps, as ordered by General Sherman (copy
