Near Big Creek, November 29, 1864.Major General J. C. DAVIS,
Commanding Fourteenth Corps:
GENERAL: The major-General commanding desires me to say that General Williams with two divisions has been ordered up here, and will cross on the bridges we now have. The approaches below are very bad. He cannot possibly reach here until to-morrow evening. The general desires you to send one division (unencumbered with wagons) and one battery to Sebastopol, to communicate with General Sherman and uncover the crossing for the Army of the Tennessee, the command to start at daylight to-morrow. The general thinks Kilpatrick should send a brigade of cavalry with this division, and desires you to communicate with him on the subject. A pontoon bridge has [been] thrown over Big Creek, and the other streams are reported as fordable.

Inclosed you will find an official coy of a note* of this date just received from Major-General Slocum. The general commanding directs that, in accordance with its instructions, you march at daylight to-morrow with your division upon Sebastopol, leaving your general supply and ammunition trains. General Kilpatrick has been requested to order a brigade of cavalry to report to you.
