The general commanding directs that you move at sunrise, cross a pontoon bridge over the yellow River (which Colonel Beuell will have laid by that time), and march to Covington, where further orders will reach you.

Commanding Fist Division, Fourteenth Army Corps:

The general commanding directs that marching at daylight you push direct for the river this side of Covington. You will destroy five miles of the railroad this side of the river, secure the crossings of Yellow River, and go into camp on the bank of the river. The general thinks you will be able to secure some forage and provisions on to- morrow's march.

Camp on yellow River, November 17, 1864.

I. The use of cartridges in killing of sheep, hogs, cattle, &c., foraged in the country is positively forbidden. Ammunition is too scarce to be wasted for such purposes.

II. No houses, mills, or any buildings of any kind will be set o n fire unless by order for the division commander, and care must be taken not to kindle or burn fires in the vicinity of forests, where they would be likely to spread over the country. This order will be read at the earliest practicable moment to every regiment in this division.
