The firing thus far is nothing more than very sharp work between those parts of lines that are very near each other. It may result in something more, but I think we are ready for anything. Will telegraph more fully soon. I don't think it is anything of great importance.

There has been no charge in the disposition of my command since last report. The Third Division has returned from fatigue and the First has been detailed for to-morrow morning. Ferrero's division has been entirely relieved. I propose making some changes in the line to-night and to-morrow for its better defense.

July 22, 1864.In obedience to Special Orders, Numbers 64, from headquarters Armies of the United States, I relinquish command of this division. In parting with my comrades and companions in arms after so long and eventful a connection, I may be permitted to say that it is to me a very painful duty, and I shall always remember with pride the regiments that I have had the honor to command, and shall feel the deepest interest in their future.
