Comdg, Detachment 16th and 17th Corps:

The major-general commanding directs that Brigadier General Kilby Smith's command be ordered to be at the head of the pontoon bridge ready to cross the river at 1 o'clock to-night., He desired that General Kilby Smith be instructed to report in person to the chief of staff at these headquarters as soon as his command has reached the bridge. He also directs that the balance of your command be held in readiness to move to the support of General Kilby Smith at any hour after dawn.

Commanding Detachment 16th and 17th Corps:

GENERAL: The major-general commanding desires you to direct Brigadier General Kilby Smith to embark, with his command of infantry and one battery of artillery, on steam-boats, with at least ten days rations and forage, and to hold himself in readiness to carry out his instructions to be given hereafter. Having given these orders, the commanding general desires to see you at these headquarters.

I know no more that I telegraphed, escort a previous report that they had crossed, and that Donaldsville was also threatened. I don't think they have actually crossed. I have sent a few cavalry asked for by Major Shaw. Report says a large force is this side near Port Hudson.
