the men being absent from duty. Supplies are getting very scarce. Two German women, refuges from Brookhaven, Miss., report a camp of instruction at that place, containing about 400 men under command of one Major Richardson.

1. Lieutenant Colonel T. H. Harris, assistant adjutant-general of volunteers, assistant adjutant-general Sixteenth Army Corps (now abolished), is hereby assigned to duty with Major General N. J. T. Dana, commanding District of West Tennessee and Vicksburg, with his present rank, subject to the approval of the President of the United States.

5. Captain John F. S. Gray, assistant adjutant-general of volunteers, is hereby permitted, at his own request, to report to Brigadier General J. W. Davidson, chief of cavalry of the division, for special temporary duty, in accordance with verbal instructions given him.

I recommend that two regiments of infantry be sent from Nineteenth Corps at Morganza to re-enforce Baton Rouge during General Davidson's absence. I do not know whether the regiments (two) hitherto ordered to Natchez are still there, or are longer required, but there will be a necessity of troops at Baton Rouge soon as a proper precaution.
