SIR: I am directed by the major-general commanding to inform you that a force of 4,000 infantry is expected from Mobile in course of to-day and to-morrow to be transshipped on other steamers at this place and sent up the Red River for the purpose of relieving the rebel garrisons in that country. Be pleased to make immediate arrangements, so far so your department is concerned, in order that the supplies required may be held in readiness and no delay on that account occur in the movement of those troops. The calculations will be based upon thirty days' supplies.
