both banks of the Mississippi rebel forces are reported quiet. A dispatch received this day from Lieutenant Curtiss, Baton Rouge, states:

I learn from what I consider good authority that General Kirby Smith has received orders to cross his entire available command to the east bank of the Mississippi, supposed for the purpose of co-operating with General Johnston.

I. Brigadier General M. K. Lawler, U. S. Volunteers, having reported at these headquarters for assignment, in obedience to Special Orders, Numbers 76, extract 4, headquarters Department of the Gulf, is hereby assigned to the command of the District of Baton Rouge, and will relieve Colonel J. G. Fonda. Upon being relieved Colonel Fonda will reassume command of the Cavalry Brigade.
