COMMANDING OFFICER AT FAYETTEVILLE:

Lieutenant General U. S. Grant has directed that Fort Smith and adjacent posts be not evacuated if they can be supplied, and if already abandoned that they be reoccupied as early as supplies can be forwarded to them. These orders have been sent to Major General J. J. Reynolds.
