HEADQUARTERS DISTRICT OF TENNESSEE,
January 12, 1865.

Brigadier-General VAN CLEVE,

Murfreesborough:

Send the Third and Fourth Michigan Infantry, without delay, by rail to Huntsville, to report to Brigadier-General Wood, commanding Fourth Army Corps.

By order of Major-General Rousseau:

B. H. POLK,

Major and Assistant Adjutant-General.

LARKINSVILLE, ALA., January 12, 1865.

Brigadier-General WHIPPLE:

Abandoned farther pursuit of Lyon near Paint Rock this a. m. The streams were impassable. There are squads of rebels that have crossed to opposite side of Paint Rock and are in woods near the bank of it, and a few squads still higher up, but the whole organization is reported broken up. A citizens says that Major Chenoweth crossed railroad near Woodville with 150. The residue of Lyon's command is beyond Paint Rock, near the mount. Could not ascertain truth of this. My command captured Lyon's wounded, 1 captain and 3 privates, his ambulances, and destroyed his artillery harness. Colonel Thompson's brigade will be shipped to-night, on reaching Woodville, to Nashville.

CHAS. CRUFT,

Brigadier-General.

(Same to General T. J. Wood.)

LARKINSVILLE, January 12, 1865.

Major-General STEEDMAN:

Arrived here 2 p. m.; will ship balance as soon as they strike railroad, and transportation can be hand. Abandoned pursuit of enemy near Point Rock; roads were impassable farther, on account of streams.

CHARLES CRUFT,

Brigadier-General.

LARKINSVILLE, January 12, 1865.

Major-General STEEDMAN:

Has colonel Harrison's command arrived? Hope ship Colonel

Salm and Colonel Mitchell during night. Is there any change destination since your dispatch on that subject?

CHARLES CRUFT,

Brigadier-General.
