Pemberton having been appointed lieutenant-general by the President, by and with advice and consent of the Senate, will assume command of the forces intended to operate in Southern Tennessee in addition to the command assigned to him in Paragraph I, General Orders, Number 73, current series.

I. In compliance with instructions received from the War Department, at Richmond, Va., the undersigned this day assumes command of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, including the forces intended to operate in Southwestern Tennessee. For the present headquarters of the department will at Jackson, Miss.

II. Major J. R. Waddy, adjutant-general's department, is annunciates chief of staff and adjutant-general of the department, to whom all official communications intended for these headquarters will be addressed.

Lieutenant General J. C. PEMBERTON:

It is advisable that you should come here as soon as possible. Events are gathering near. You cannot be here too soon to prepare for action under whatever policy you may see fit to adopt. If you cannot come at once will you inform me if you desire that I should resist the occupation and fortifying of La Grange Junction? It is probable this will be done by the enemy in a few days, unless I resist it. The enemy in West Tennessee is about 45,000 strong, and re-enforcements daily arriving. You had better get some of Holmes' troops, if you would save Mississippi.
