If report be confirmed, order in my name General Wheeler to concentrate forthwit for the defense of Columbia, either by joining his forces to yours of by attacking enemy in flank and rear. Order also Generals Cheatham and Stewart to hasten their movement on Columbia, or join Wheeler, as circumstance may best require. Be careful dispatches do not fall into the hands of the enemy.
