I. Colonel D. H. Hamilton is, at his own request, relieved from the command of McGowan's brigade should and his own regiment (First South Carolina Regiment), and will report to the Adjutant and Inspector General, C. S. Army, Richmond, Va., with the request that he be ordered to Charleston, S. C., for duty.

Order one regiment of your brigade to Little Levels, in Pocahontas County, station one regiment near Lewisburg, and order one to report to Colonel McCausland; send Witcher's battalion to Zollicoffer, East Tennessee, near Bristol:

Report execution of this order, the number of the regiment sent to each place, and use all possible dispatch. Notify General Imboden and Colonel W. L. Jackson of the move.

Please forward the accompanying dispatch to Colonel Ferguson, commanding General Jenkins' brigade, on Staunton and Parkersburg turnpike, near Monterey, with all possible haste, as also the one to General Imboden. They are of greatest importance.

From report of Major Bowyer, the ammunition in the department is fearfully short. Exposed troops have only 23 rounds. Unless ammunition is hurried here immediately, the consequences will be most disastrous. Am satisfied Major Bowyer could not have made reports required. If necessary, that can be inquired into hereafter. Ammunition is needed now.
