GENERAL: At daybreak I drove in the enemy's pickets to their rifle-pits at the station. They soon after advanced at least a brigade of infantry and one of cavalry. They have not yet reached Bealeton.

COLONEL: A staff officer from Colonel Gregg reports Devin's brigade falling back upon the Warrenton road, and that Colonel Gregg was in readiness to take a new position. I have sent a staff officer down to get more certain information. The pickets of my first brigade extend from Waterloo to Fox's Ford. This line is still preserved. At Fox's Ford the Second Brigade took up the line and ex-
