It is probable, therefore, that more than $10,000 from the engineer agency has been applied and expended on the work here. The drays were ordered and were mostly useless, as the material was so poor that the quartermaster's department would not take them. The carts ordered were useful, and large numbers, nearly all, were turned over to the quartermaster's department and sent to other places. It may be added that all employes in the engineer department draw rations from the commissary department, and that the quartermaster's department furnishes horses and forage.
