Ulysses S. Grant's Birthplace
U.S. Grant, one of the most prominent Generals of the American Civil War who went on to become the 18th president of the United States, began his life in rural Ohio. Born in 1822 Grant's real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. At the age of 17 Congressman Thomas L. Hamer referred Grant to the United States Military Academy as "Ulysses S. Grant" and the name stuck. The House Grant grew up in became a unique National attraction after his death. Uprooted and move about as a traveling memorial, the house traveled via barge or railway car across the Nation. It came to rest in Columbus Ohio for 40 years. In 1936 the house moved back to its place of origin. Those interested can visit Grant's place of birth at 1551 State Rt. 232 Point Pleasant, OH 45153. The site has several informative plaques and tours through the house are available.
