Southern Illinois University Press- Big Name in Civil War History

Small Press Becoming a Big Name in Civil War History

Since it began publishing in 1956, Southern Illinois University Press has produced major works on American history, particularly from the Civil War era.  One need look no further than the thirty-one volumes of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant to see that SIU Press is dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of this major epoch in our history.  In the last few years, however, SIU Press has stepped up its output of high quality, well researched books on the Civil War and President Lincoln.

With such luminaries in the field as Allen C. Guelzo, Harold Holzer, and Michael Burlingame, along with rising stars like Jason Emerson, whose The Madness of Mary Lincoln has catapulted him into the top ranks of Lincoln scholars, SIU Press has become increasingly popular among Lincoln buffs.  But by no means are the Press’s efforts restricted to the study of the sixteenth president.  SIU Press has recently released several excellent books covering many facets of the Civil War.  These include The Shiloh Campaign, The Edge of Mosby’s Sword, Double Duty in the Civil War, Until Antietam, Chicago’s Irish Legion, Confederate Daughters, The Class of 1861, Cumberland Blood, and A Just and Righteous Cause, to name just a few.
