HEADQUARTERS SECOND CAVALRY DIVISION, DEPARTMENT OF WEST VIRGINIA,
Near Leetown, September 10, 1864.

Chief of Cavalry:

GENERAL: I have the honor to report that there is now no force of the enemy farther north than Darkesville. The enemy left a picket at Big Springs on retiring, but it was driven away by a scouting party.

Chief of Cavalry:

GENERAL: From information received from various sources I learn that General Early's headquarters were yesterday evening sixteen miles from Martinsburg; General Breckinridge's, fifteen miles from that place. The infantry which came north of Bunker Hill had orders to camp between Bunker Hill and Darkesville.

COLONEL: I have the honor to request that you will permit my forage train to come to this point from Harper's Ferry, where it now is. I also request that you will directs cars to run on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as far as Kearnesville, to bring forage to that point for my command.

Colonel SCHOONMAKLER, First Brigade:

COLONEL: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of 7.20 a. m. to-day. The general commanding has directed that Colonel Powell relieve his pickets from Darkesville to the Openquon. Forage has been sent you this morning. Please be kind enough to forward at once the reports called for yesterday. Reports have not been received every hour.
