GENERAL: I have the honor to report for the information of the commanding general of the forces that, so far as can be observed this morning, in the intense haze and smoke, no change occurred in the enemy's position in front of this corps during the night.

CAPTAIN: The officers in charge of picket stations to each brigade of the division report the moving of trains to the left from 1 to 3 this a. m., also some to the right; did not think it to be artillery. No other demonstrations were made.

The Secretary of War directs me to inform you that General Stoneman was, in the first instance, relieved by an order of General Grant, which was temporarily suspended by the Secretary. It was afterward renewed by the Secretary. Upon receipt of your telegram to me to-day the matter was referred to General Grant for such action as he deemed proper. General Grant has in reply sent the following telegram.* The Secretary of War directs that if, on consideration, you think it expedient to instruct General Stoneman with the important command of
